ICE SAFETY TIPS
If you find yourself falling through the ice experts suggest you do the following;
Remain calm, get your breathing under control
Swim back to the side you approached from as you know that was safe ice
Pull your arms up onto the ice ( if you have ice picks use them)
Kick your feet and pull with your arms
Kick and pull kick and pull
Once on top of the ice roll away from the open water
Get yourself into a heater area if you can and remove your wet cloths, wrap yourself in a warm blanket
If you were in the water for much longer call 911 GET HELP
Remember Hypothermia can kill, conditions are unpredictable and tell someone where you are going. The 1-10-1 rule applies, you have 1 minute to get your breathing under control, you have 10 minutes of meaningful movement and you have 1 hour before you go unconscious.
Wear a float suit, carry ice picks, don’t just walk out on a lake or pond.
